Tartar or Calculus is plaque that has hardened on your teeth because of precipitation of mineral salts, turning yellow or brown since tartar is more porous and absorbs stains easily; gives plaque more surface area on which to grow and a much stickier surface to adhere, leading to cavities and gum disease. |
